All of the funds raised at this event will be donated in Suri’s name to The Hospital for Sick Children, Brain Tumour Research.
Suri Olivia Boon was born on February 18th 2009. At four months old she was diagnosed with Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumours (ATRT) and was given a 30% chance of surviving brain cancer. Suri amazed everyone with her spirit and determination as she underwent 3 brain surgeries in 10 days, followed by 2 induction rounds of chemotherapy and 3 stem cell transplants with high dose chemotherapy. Throughout the five and one-half months Suri spent at The Hospital for Sick Children, she was rarely without a smile on her face. Although she had her fair share of problems along the way she was beating her cancer and was doing it on schedule. With only two weeks to go before completing her treatment and coming home for Christmas, Suri suffered a very rare side effect of her chemotherapy. Suri was rushed to the critical care unit and was put on a ventilator as she began suffering severe pulmonary hypertension. She could no longer breathe on her own. The chemotherapy that had killed her cancer had destroyed her lungs. Sadly, on December 2, 2009 Suri passed away in her parents arms.
Brain tumours are the leading cause of cancerous deaths among children under the age of 20.
The Hospital for Sick Children is the only facility in Canada that has a research centre dedicated to paediatric brain cancer research. The first annual event raised over $80,000 which is being used to help fund an international study on ATRT brain cancer being headed by SickKids. Please help Lisa, Jarrod their family and friends as they work towards finding a cure for this devastating disease and help those who are currently fighting to beat the odds.
We hope that you will save the date and join the Boon family on February 10, 2012 to celebrate Suri’s life and help us work towards finding a cure.
